( what is any username he ever chooses. pick your battles, rowena.
that he doesn't have to be told twice. again. it's only been the weekend since his cas up and left to die all over again. )
I have the opening shift at The Scratch. ( they call it 'an opener.' ) Door's open, ignore that we aren't open til 2.
( he comes in early to do the prep. it's why he likes the opening shifts. it keeps his mind occupied. and he gets to sip from whiskey as he goes about his business.
rowena will find him putting down the chairs from the tables.
bar's all set-up, TV is playing whatever's on on mute. he has some good classic rock going. something he really, really missed from being five years into the apocalypse. )
( this time she agrees, this time rowena doesn't mind that they're meeting in public and really, she wonders if this kind of setting might be better for their conversation. he'll be more occupied, she'll... maybe not be so defensive.
she's there quickly, the perks of being able to teleport, long-sleeved purple blouse and black pants, her hair fully pinned up that day. and she opts to sit at the bar, patiently for when he gets back to her )
You found a job quicker than I did.
( no judgement is found in her voice, just a mild commentary piece )
( he turns and jumps out of his skin with a )Jesus. ( last time someone did that, was Cas, and years before. great, he has to get used to people appearing of of nowhere again.
his heartbeat returns to some semblance of normal as he pushes the chair he'd just put down in. )
Anyone ever tell you you should wear a bell?
( she shouldn't, especially if sneaking up on anyone. but. the snark runs deep and it's still a first move for him.
he rounds back to the bar, sliding the glass he's currently using down the way and setting an empty twin next to it. refilling his only a bit, and filling hers a healthy amount. )
Our search histories were put on blast, Sara came to me. Simon... this Duke needed soundproofing done. Guess he and his wife share a cottage with her brother.
his comment about a bell did make her smile slightly and maybe his brand of snark she's needed in a way. a distraction, a comfort... something. plus the drink is welcome )
I suppose in some way you've also had a job before.
( she ignores everything from before she became a witch. working on a farm was definitely nothing that she'd do again )
( though it's said as if she's admitting something she doesn't want to admit. it had taken her a long time to come around to that idea and it was only because of what the place was that had encouraged her )
( he takes a small sip, before moving over to the ticket system. he pushes the feeding button, to feed paper through, before tearing off a piece.
he grabs a small check clipboard and clips the paper underneath, before finally grabbing a pen.
while she speaks, or sips, he's doing a count of what he has to grab from the back. first, he studies the bottles in front of them, but he can multitask, can't he? )
( he scribbles down notes for bottles he needs to grab for the wall before checking each low boy one by one, and counting.
it keeps him going. it keeps him from thinking only about what he left behind, and what's back there. what cas went back to. so, several hours a day, he occupies himself. he pours drinks. he restocks a bar.
he jots a few more product names down. 7 of those. 10 of those. )
( there's a pause, a thought of how to word what she wants because it's awkward enough. small talk didn't come so naturally to people that were wary and whilst rowena was perfectly capable of it... it's not so mich something she was used to with dean. any dean. not when they usually talked when something was happening )
But I'm trying for a better conversation than... any of our previous ones. ( building up. trying some honesty ) And whilst getting to know you doesn't quite sound possible... this place is also a different place.
( no hunting for one, no cases, none of their usual relationship. or what she had with the other dean )
( he looks up from his notes, waiting. what? she's - okay, she's trying. maybe she gets points for it. points for trying to have a conversation with this stunted, tired, shell of a dean.
he sighs and sets his notes down. )
Not much more to get to know. We diverge after the seals were broken. 'Stead of Dean and the other Sam doing whatever they did to put a lid on Lucifer, my Sam said yes. That was the beginning of the end.
( she can imagine what that meant, what ended up. he alluded to it, some. but he didn't get into it, did he. )
( she vaguely knows how many but it doesn't matter. it's less her point )
I know the hunter, the one who'll very happily tell me witches are terrible. ( to some effect. not that she corrects him often ) You're not a hunter here.
( and rather than leaving it so vague she'll try for a question )
( witches are bad news. he could tell her that. he trusts her up to a point, but she's right that neither of them have a reason to go after the other one. and he hasn't hunted or been on a job in over five years. there are no jobs when every day becomes about surviving what comes next.
if he entertained the thought, and thought back to who he was at one time.
if he could hold down any job besides pool sharking and stealing identities, why wouldn't it be a bar. he would be good at it. he has the personality. he could totally get a bachelorette party of girls to do shots with him. he'd make some bar a lot of money. and himself.
but he had his work. jobs. )
It's a job. Keeps me occupied. ( his mind, his hands. ) As good a place as any.
( he's not against more odd construction jobs, but he also doesn't have the capital, does he? )
Hunting's not something you forget how to do. But, eventually, those skills - they shifted into survival skills. And those aren't getting me any cash.
( what also feels true is that he's only told her part of the answer, just enough to give to a witch that he doesn't trust. which is why she doesn't press. there's no telling that the more would be satisfactory )
I... work in a shop. ( which still feels like an unlikely thing to her. customer service? so not her thing.
and yet-- )
The owner was looking for advice. When we spoke I didn't think that I would take it, though it was the shop itself that convinced me over her.
( it's a small comfort. he's always liked alcohol. and it's not busy during his shifts, so it gives him the solitude he needs right now. but, no, he doesn't say any of that out loud, does he? )
Let me guess. Magic.
( or, quaint Scottish trinkets. but, he's not about to snark that hard.
( there's a little tip of her head like naturally )
It's current owner knows very little about magic. Though the witch who used to own it...
( the smile that rowena gives is one of a little excitement, a little lusting over the faint spells that she'd still felt there, the power this witch must have. except it wasn't really about her power but the magic she would have known and perhaps a witch to talk to, to share something with. something she's always failed to do well before )
It's usually quiet there, not so many visit it. But it gives me opportunities to do what I need to.
( peruse the books there, prepare any hex bags or spells she might need. or contemplate )
( he doesn't love the expression she takes on, following her twinge of excitement she feels. he doesn't say anything about it, letting her have her moment.
sounds like they have it in common, the quiet, the solitude. )
( she pauses to sip, and the answer that comes from her is genuine. magic is at least a conversation topic that she's more willing to do that on... for as long as someone is willing to listen )
Most of the magic you've seen has been for a purpose, whether you've used it or a witch has. But... there are aspects of it that you wouldn't know, and regrettably not something every witch would follow.
( especially younger witches. maybe it's her age, maybe it's when she studied, maybe it's why )
There are traditions that have become part of my practice over my life. Some of that time I use to make those preparations.
( the pause she gives here is in debate of whether she should elaborate more, to clarify those intentions or not. she hopes for not )
( there's a simplicity and tradition in it he can respect, hesitant to ask about what the preparations would be for. they will still keep what they want back, that is their rights.
he checks his list again, looking up from it.
if she's going to be here, maybe she can help. makes the task go by faster which means more idle thought time, but also, it means more drinking time. he could do with both. )
( those traditions and practices had never left her but here, and over the last couple of years, but she'd certainly had other distractions. now her focus was more on a simpler practice, of building her life, learning what she wanted of magic rather than focusing on survival by any means. she'd found more of a settled existence.
she looks up at his question, a flicker of surprise in her expression and rowena's instinctual response is to say no. but she doesn't, giving a moment of pause )
( she looks at it for another moment before holding her hand out for it. she can write... and maybe she'll suggest a couple of bottles that aren't on the stock list for flavour )
I won't ask you to pay me.
( the driest joke, and once the pen is in her hand she looks at him expectantly, writing down anything that he says to her. sometimes with a little commentary on it )
( it's - well, nice isn't a word he'd use these days, but it is. it's routine and she's good at writing down what he'll need to grab. he pulls the bottles from within earshot first before pulling boxes from the back and unpacking them.
he shows her one of the bottles, passing it to her )
